Common Xbox problems

Xbox on, but no signal on the TV. If the console powers on but the TV shows no signal, the HDMI port is often damaged or loose. Before you bring it in, try a different HDMI cable, TV input and TV. Our tip on PS5 and Xbox HDMI port problems walks through what to check first.

Xbox won't turn on. A console that won't power on can have a failed power supply, a bad power connection or a fault on the board. The free diagnostic tells you which, and what the fix costs, before any work starts.

Overheating, loud fan or shutting off mid-game. A console that runs hot, gets loud or shuts off has an overheating problem. Common causes include dust buildup, a failing fan and dried-out thermal paste.

Disc not reading or stuck. Disc drive problems are one of the console repairs we do. Don't force a stuck disc; bring the console in.

Startup error. Write the error code down and bring the console in. The code helps us narrow down the problem during the free diagnostic.

Controller drifting or buttons not working. Controller repair is part of our console repair. Stick drift and dead buttons get a free diagnostic first.

Liquid spilled on the console or controller. Unplug it right away and don't power it back on. Bring it in for a free diagnostic.

How an Xbox repair works

  1. Bring in the console, its power cord and, if relevant, the controller. You don't need an appointment.
  2. We run a free diagnostic and tell you what's wrong and what it costs before any work starts.
  3. We repair it and test it before you pick it up. You can follow the repair on our status page.

We're open Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturday 10am to 5pm.

Protect your console

  • Give it room to breathe. Keep vents clear and away from walls and closed cabinets.
  • Unplug it during storms. Ready.gov recommends disconnecting electronics during a power outage to avoid damage from surges when power returns.
  • Pack it carefully when you move. If you have PCS orders, the original box or plenty of padding helps. Our Fort Hood PCS device checklist covers getting all your devices ready to move.
  • Set up parental controls. If the kids use the Xbox, our back-to-school device guide links to the FTC's parental-controls advice.
