Phone and laptop repair for soldiers in the barracks

We're 254 Repair, a veteran-owned repair shop in Killeen. When you live in the barracks, your phone is your alarm clock, your bank, your line home and half your social life. Your laptop is how you get through online classes and how you game after duty. When one of them breaks, you don't have a spare in the next room. This page explains how a repair at our Killeen shop actually works, so you can fit it around your schedule and protect your data.

We're at 3921 East Stan Schlueter Loop, Ste 103, in Killeen, just south of Fort Hood. We don't offer shuttles, pickup or on-post service. You bring the device to the shop, and you pick it up at the shop.

When you can drop off and pick up

We're open Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm, and Saturday, 10am to 5pm. We're closed Sunday. Walk-ins are welcome, so you don't need an appointment.

Some practical tips for fitting it in:

  • Lunch or after duty. If your day ends before 6pm, a weekday drop-off after duty works. Saturday is the easiest day for many people.
  • Plan for two trips. Some repairs need a part ordered for your exact model. For Android phones, typical parts jobs take about 3 business days. Ask at the counter how long your repair should take before you leave, so you can plan the pickup around field time or staff duty.
  • Track it. You can check your repair on our status page instead of calling.
  • Heading to the field? Tell us your dates when you drop off. If you'll be gone longer than the repair, say so up front. Our deployment and field-time device prep guide covers what to set up before you go.

Military discount

Active duty, veterans and military families can ask for our military discount. Just ask at the counter.

Free diagnostic, quote before work, and warranty

  • Free diagnostic. We check the device and tell you what's wrong. You get the price before any work starts.
  • If we can't fix it, there's no charge.
  • 90-day warranty on parts and labor for the part we replaced. It doesn't cover new physical damage or water damage.
  • Starting prices for common repairs, like iPhone screens and batteries, iPad screens and some laptop repairs, are on our price list, tax included. Other repairs are quoted in the shop after the free diagnostic.

Your data and privacy

This is the part people worry about most, and it's fair to ask about. Here's how to protect yourself, whichever shop you use.

Back up before you drop off

Most repairs, like screens and batteries, don't touch your data, but always back up first if you can. That way your data is safe no matter what is wrong with the device.

  • iPhone: turn on iCloud Backup and check that the last backup date is recent.
  • Android: turn on Google backup and make sure your photos are syncing.
  • Laptop: copy school, work and personal files to an external drive or a cloud account before you bring it in.

If the device won't turn on, bring it in anyway. The free diagnostic tells you what's wrong. Data recovery is quoted in the shop after a free diagnostic, because what can be recovered depends on the drive and the damage.

Passcodes

Have your passcode handy so we can test the repair with you. After a screen or charging repair, someone has to check that touch, the display, charging and the cameras actually work. If you have questions about what we need to test your specific repair, ask at the counter before you hand over the device. Our drop-off checklist covers passcodes and what to bring.

What to do yourself before you hand it over

These are general steps you control:

  • Sign out of anything you don't want open on a shared or work laptop, and close open documents.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication for your email and bank so a password alone can't get into them. CISA explains how to turn on multifactor authentication.
  • Don't leave government or work files on a personal device unless your unit allows it. Follow your unit's rules for anything work-related.

Wiping: only when you're getting rid of the device

You don't need to erase a phone or laptop to get it repaired, and erasing a device you're keeping just means restoring it later. Wipe a device when you're selling, trading or giving it away, after you've backed it up. If you're moving to a new phone after a repair, move your authenticator app and two-factor codes first.
