How to prepare your phone or laptop for repair

A few minutes of prep before you drop off a device makes the repair go faster and protects what matters most: your photos, messages and files. Here is what we suggest before you call or stop by our Killeen shop.

Back up first

Most repairs never touch your data. A new screen, battery or charging port usually leaves everything exactly where it was. But some problems, like water damage, a failing storage drive or a fault on the board, can put data at risk no matter how careful anyone is. A recent backup is the only real protection.

  • iPhone and iPad: turn on iCloud Backup in Settings, or back up to a computer.
  • Android: turn on Google backup in Settings (the menu name varies by brand) and check that your photos are syncing.
  • Laptops and PCs: copy important files to an external drive or an online storage account.
  • Game consoles: make sure your game saves are synced to your account.

If the device won't turn on, you can't back it up. Tell us at the counter if the data matters, and we'll plan the repair with that in mind.

Your passcode: what we need and why

To confirm everything works after a repair (touch, Face ID, cameras, speakers, calls), a technician usually needs to get past the lock screen. You have a few options:

  • Share your passcode at drop-off so we can test everything.
  • Switch to a simple temporary passcode before you come in, then change it back at pickup.
  • Unlock the device yourself at pickup so we can test it together.

Whatever you choose, just let us know at the counter.

Know your account passwords

After some repairs, or if a device ever has to be reset, you'll need your Apple ID, Google account or Microsoft sign-in. Make sure you know those passwords before you drop off. Leave Find My and similar settings as they are unless we ask; we'll tell you if a repair needs a change.

What to bring and what to keep

Bring:

  • The device itself.
  • For laptops, the charger. It helps us test, and sometimes a bad charger is the real problem.
  • For consoles, a controller if the problem involves one.

Take off or keep at home:

  • Cases, wallet cases, grips and any cards tucked inside.
  • Memory cards, USB drives and game discs.

Leave the SIM card in your phone unless we ask for it; it helps us test calls and signal.

Tell us what happened

The more we know, the faster the diagnostic goes. Think about:

  • What happened: a drop, a spill, an update, or did it just start on its own?
  • When did it start, and does it come and go?
  • Has it been repaired before?
  • Is anything else acting up, even something small?

If something was already broken before this problem, mention it. We'll note it at check-in so there are no surprises at pickup.

Plan around your schedule

If you're about to PCS, deploy, travel or start a new job, tell us your date. Anyone at Fort Hood knows a move doesn't wait. We'll tell you up front whether the part is in stock and how long the repair will take.

What happens when you drop it off

At 254 Repair we check your device in with you, note its condition, and run a free diagnostic. We explain what we find and quote the repair before any work starts; if we can't fix it, there's no charge. We use high quality parts, and repairs come with a 90-day warranty on parts and labor. You can follow along on our repair status page.

If your phone just got wet, skip the prep and read what to do if your phone gets wet instead. Speed matters more than a backup in that case.
