What to do if your phone gets wet (and what not to do)

A phone slips into the pool, a glass of tea tips over on the nightstand, or a Central Texas storm catches you between the parking lot and the door. It happens to almost everyone eventually. What you do in the next few minutes matters, because water alone is rarely what kills a phone. The real damage starts when electricity runs through wet components, and when minerals or sugar left behind begin to corrode the board.

Here is what we tell people who call or stop by our Killeen shop right after an accident.

Do this right away

  1. Get it out and turn it off. Don't wait to see whether it still works. Power it down even if the screen looks normal. A phone that stays on keeps pushing current through any liquid inside.
  2. Unplug everything. Disconnect the charger, headphones and any accessories, and take off the case so trapped water can escape.
  3. Pull the SIM tray. An open tray gives moisture one more way out and keeps the SIM card safe.
  4. Dry the outside gently. Use a soft, lint-free cloth on the ports, buttons and edges. Hold the phone with the charging port facing down and tap it lightly against your palm so water can drain.
  5. Remember what it was. Pool water, salt water, soda, coffee and tap water all behave differently inside a device. Tell us at the counter; it helps the diagnostic.
  6. Bring it in soon. The sooner a technician can open it and check the board, the better your chances. Same day is best.

What not to do

  • Don't charge it. Plugging in a wet phone is one of the quickest ways to turn a cleanable problem into a dead board, even if the phone is labeled water resistant.
  • Don't keep turning it on to check. Every power-up is a gamble while liquid is still inside.
  • Don't use a hair dryer, oven or microwave. Heat can warp adhesive, stress the battery and push moisture deeper.
  • Don't count on rice. Rice dries the outside at best. It does nothing about residue on the board, and starch and dust can end up in the ports. Days spent waiting in a bag are days corrosion keeps working.
  • Don't shake it hard or blow into the ports. That spreads liquid around inside.
  • Don't rely on a water-resistance rating. Seals wear out with age, drops and earlier repairs, and those ratings aren't about chlorinated pool water or a sweet drink.

"It works fine now." Should I still bring it in?

Often a wet phone works for a day or a week, and then the screen flickers, the speaker sounds muffled, Face ID quits or charging stops. That is corrosion catching up. If your phone took a real dunk, a free diagnostic costs you nothing and can catch problems early.

Signs that liquid got inside:

  • Fog or droplets under the camera lens or the screen
  • A muffled speaker or microphone
  • A liquid warning when you plug in, or no charging at all
  • Lines, spots or flicker on the display
  • The battery draining much faster than before, or the phone running warm

Laptops, tablets and controllers

The same rules apply: unplug it, turn it off and don't power it back on. For a laptop, open it and set it upside down like a tent, keyboard facing down, so the spill drains away from the board. Bring tablets, laptops and game controllers in the same way.

What happens at 254 Repair

Bring a wet device to our shop on East Stan Schlueter Loop and we start with a free diagnostic. A technician opens it, checks for liquid and corrosion, and explains what can be done before any work starts. If we can't fix it, there is no charge. Sometimes a cleaning is enough; sometimes a screen, battery or charging port needs replacing, and we use high quality parts. Every liquid job is different, so we quote it after we look, not before.

One honest note: our 90-day warranty covers the parts we replace, but it can't cover the water damage itself. Corrosion can keep showing up in other areas after a repair, and we'll tell you what we see.

If your photos and contacts matter more than the phone, say so. Sometimes the goal is simply to get the phone running long enough to back it up, and we can plan the repair around that. More on our water damage repair page.
