A laptop that takes five minutes to start or sounds like a hair dryer is more than annoying. Slow and hot often go together, because a laptop that runs too hot slows itself down to protect its parts. Some causes you can fix yourself in an afternoon. Others need a technician. Here's how to tell the difference.
Common reasons a laptop gets slow
- Too many programs start with it. Every program that launches at startup uses memory and slows everything else.
- The storage is nearly full. When the drive has little free space left, the whole system bogs down.
- An older spinning hard drive. It's much slower than a solid-state drive and wears out over time.
- Not enough memory for how you use it today, especially with lots of browser tabs, video calls or games.
- Viruses, adware or pop-ups. Unwanted software can quietly use up resources.
- Updates waiting in the background, or one that didn't finish installing.
- Heat. A laptop that runs hot slows itself down on purpose.
Common reasons a laptop overheats
- Dust and pet hair in the fan and vents. Over a year or two, it builds up and blocks airflow.
- Blocked vents. Beds, couches, blankets and laps cover the vents on the bottom or sides.
- Dried-out thermal paste. The paste that moves heat away from the processor dries out with age.
- A failing fan. Grinding, rattling or no fan noise at all under load are warning signs.
- Texas heat. A laptop left in a hot car, or used outside in summer, starts out warm before you've opened anything.
What you can safely try at home
- Restart it. A full restart, not sleep.
- Install pending updates for the operating system and your main programs.
- Trim startup programs. On Windows, open Task Manager and check the Startup tab. On a Mac, check Login Items in System Settings.
- Free up space. Delete large files you don't need and empty the trash or recycle bin.
- Uninstall programs you don't use, especially toolbars, "PC cleaners" and anything you don't remember installing.
- Use it on a hard, flat surface. A desk or a laptop stand lets the vents breathe.
If it's still slow or hot after that, it's time to have it looked at.
When to bring it in
Bring the laptop in if you notice any of these:
- It shuts off by itself, especially during video calls or games.
- The fan is loud all the time, grinds or rattles, or never seems to run.
- The bottom or keyboard is too hot to touch while it's barely doing anything.
- The trackpad or case is lifting or bulging. That can be a swollen battery, so stop charging it and bring it in right away.
- You hear clicking from the drive, or see frequent freezes or crash screens.
- Pop-ups, a changed homepage or programs you didn't install keep coming back.
- It was slow before, and the steps above didn't help.
Don't open the laptop to clean the fan unless you've done it before. It's easy to break a clip or a ribbon cable, and some models have to come almost completely apart to reach the fan.
Before you drop it off
Back up your important files to an external drive or an online storage account, especially if the drive might be failing. Know your Windows or Apple account password. And bring your charger. It helps the diagnostic, and sometimes a weak charger is part of the problem. Our guide to preparing your device for repair has the full checklist.
