Signs your phone battery needs replacing

Phone batteries don't fail overnight. They wear down a little with every charge, and most people only notice once the phone can't get through a normal day. The good news is that a battery is one of the quicker repairs we do, and a fresh one can make an older phone feel new again. Here is how to tell whether yours is ready.

1. It doesn't last the day anymore

If a phone that used to reach bedtime now needs a charger by mid-afternoon, and you haven't changed how you use it, the battery is the usual suspect. As a battery ages it holds less energy, so the same "100%" simply doesn't go as far.

2. It shuts off with charge left

Sudden shutdowns at 20 or 30 percent, or the moment you open the camera or a game, are a classic sign of a worn battery. An older battery can't deliver power fast enough during those heavy moments, so the phone turns itself off to protect itself.

3. The percentage jumps around

Dropping from 40 percent to single digits in a few minutes, or sitting at one number for an hour and then falling off a cliff, means the phone can no longer read the battery accurately.

4. It feels slower than it used to

Some phones throttle themselves to avoid unexpected shutdowns when the battery is worn. If apps take longer to open and everything feels sluggish, a new battery can bring the speed back.

5. It gets hot doing ordinary things

A little warmth while charging is normal. A phone that gets uncomfortably hot while you're just texting or scrolling deserves a closer look.

6. The screen or back is lifting

This one is urgent. A swollen battery can push the screen away from the frame or bulge the back of a phone, tablet or laptop. Stop charging it, don't press on it, and never try to puncture or flatten it. Bring it to a repair shop right away. A swollen battery is a safety problem, not just an annoyance.

7. Your phone tells you

On an iPhone, open Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health. A low Maximum Capacity or a "Service" message means the battery has worn down. Many Android phones have a similar battery or device care screen in Settings; the name depends on the brand.

It might not be the battery

Not every power problem is a tired battery. A charging port packed with pocket lint, a bad cable, an app running in the background or a recent update can all look like battery trouble. That's why we test before we recommend anything. If cleaning the port fixes it, that's what we'll tell you.

Make your new battery last longer

  • Don't leave your phone in a hot car. A Texas summer afternoon is hard on any battery.
  • You don't need to run it down to zero before charging. Topping up during the day is fine.
  • Use a good charger and cable.
  • Turn on optimized or adaptive charging if your phone offers it.
